Great Expectations #2.
In the first book of Great Expectations, we come across many characters with interesting names. One of these characters that particularly stands out to me is Estella. Her name is abrupt sounding, it does not roll off the tongue. It also sounds harsh and tempered. "With this boy! Why, he is a common laboring-boy!" (Page 60) Estella said disdainfully. In this quote, she is being rude to Pip and not respecting him. Estella is calling him a poor, lower class boy. The real meaning of the name Estella, means Star. When I hear this, I first think of something pretty and twinkling in the sky. Then, when I think about it more, a burning gas pops into my mind. I do not think that that sounds too elegant and nice. Just like Estella, she is pretty and nice on the outside, but on the inside, she is just a bunch of mean comments, ready to spill out.

ReplyDeleteI don't agree with you when you say that Estella's name is "abrupt sounding". I think it rolls off the tongue because it ends with an "a". Usually when people meet me they call me Christin"a" because they say they don't want to stop at the "e". Anyways I agree that Estella means star, but I actually think she emulates a star. By star I mean like a celebrity. She is so mean and into herself just like how Stars are. On page 93 she says this to Pip, "You may kiss me, if you like." You can tell how she is so into herself because she automatically thinks Pip wants to kiss her, so she is giving him permission in advance. Then on page 82 she asks Pip, "Am I pretty?" Who would ask the kind of a question unless they weren't full of themselves like a Star. Estella has all the qualities a Star (celebrity) would have.
